Artist Statement

The heavens are telling of the glory of God
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Psalm 19:1

"The artist in our society is in a very peculiar position, on the one hand he is regarded very highly, almost like a high priest of culture who knows the inner secrets of reality. But on the other hand, he is a completely superflous person whom people like to think highly of, but quite ready to allow to starve."
- Hans Rookmaaker

Using acrylic paint on canvas, and often mixed media, my work lends itself to either high or low-key palettes that are created with very fluid, layered acrylic paints and glazes. I like to work large since I find that allows the pigments to flow more naturally, and the mutability gives the viewer a look reminiscent of watercolor techniques. Multiple stratum of paint and glazes build upon one another, to create new colors and allow light to be captured between successive coatings, creating a more dimensional and colorful image.

My often used subject matter of “spacescapes” allows me to use my imagination, while at the same time appreciating the God given beauty that science is only now proving to us beyond our wildest dreams. I hope to engage the viewer in a bit of wonder at the abstract beauty and charged energy of space.
